Common name: Boulenger’s Skink. SVL 50mm, Total length 90mm
Boulenger’s Skink is one of eight Australian skinks in the genus Morethia, also known as firetail skinks. Morethia belong to the Eugongylus Group of skinks. The skink was named after George Albert Boulenger (1858-1937), a Belgian-British zoologist.
The markings and coloration of Boulenger’s Skink can vary significantly between individuals. It back is grey or brown with coloured flecks forming longitudinal stripes. Along its side, there is a thin white stripe from the mouth to the groin. Above the white line is often a thicker black stripe. Juvenile lizards have a distinctive red-orange tinge on the the side of the tail, which is a distinguishing feature of the Morethia genus.
Distribution: This is essentially and inland species, and it is common from just south of Canberra but unknown on the Monaro, the coast and higher areas.
