The Eastern Blue-tongue is one of eight blue-tongue species (Tiliqua) found in Australia and Indonesia. Tiliqua belong to the Egernia Group of skinks. Three species of blue-tongue are found in the Canberra region.

The blue-tongue in the Canberra region that is strongly banded belongs to the sub-species Tiliqua scincoides scincoides, which is characterised by a dark stripe behind eye.

Distribution: Common throughout tablelands and coast.
