The fruitbody is a shallow cup or disk, bright orange-red and up to 2 centimetres in diameter (though often no more than half that). The rim and outer surface bear numerous brown hairs (up to 2 millimetres long in some species).
The fruitbodies grow on rotting wood or soil.
Look-alikes
There are several genera with cup-like or disk-like fruitbodies in shades of orange but in most the rim and outer surface are smooth or with little more than a warty ornamentation. Species of Cheilymenia may have similar hairs but their fruitbodies are mostly found on dung, are more yellowish and (in many cases) only a few millimetres in diameter.
