It's not a Jacky Winter because the local race has completely white outer tail feathers. This bird only has the white tips. My best guess is Weebill, though it could be Striated Thornbill as well.

another suggestion on Canberra Birders was a Western Gerygone could it be this? The beak looks too pointy for a Weebill and it was to grey to be a Striated Thornbill. Thanks for your help Ryu, too bad we didn't get a better photo.

Ah yes Western Gerygones would fit the tail too and most likely of all the suggestions to have been confused with a Jacky Winter. There has certainly been one around there recently.

Sorry for the error, it looked like a Jacky Winter to me, especially the way it is flying and perching, but I agree now that Western Gerygone is a better fit. Thanks Ryu for picking this up, especially on noticing the difference in tail feathers.

Thanks Ryu appreciate your good eyes. Thanks also natureguy, it was a tricky one from the terrible photos.

Although Western Gerygones have white at the base of the tail too which I feel ought to be visible in this photo...
