This looks like it could be a Desmodium. Medicago should have more serrate leaf tips, but this might be just a young plant. Photos of bracts, or flowers as they develop should answer this question.
Yes it is a relatively young plant because it is in a section of the woodland that gets regularly mowed and just appears now and again! We do have Desmodium varians growing in another part of the woodland.
