it is hard to gauge the depths and fill of a pond unless you have xray eyes!!
I go with the technique to guesstimate the high water mark level, kneel down at the waters edge to look back at the high water mark and try to have my eyes on the same level as the HWM, then turning around, looking across the water and guesstimate how many cms the level has dropped down to get to it's current state. Hope that helps!!
