Below 1000m it is most likely S.graminifolium which tends to display a sloppier & less compact rosette than it's alpine counterpart. Myself, I don't tend to see S.montanum until 1200-1300m and even then, it is typically restricted to swamps.

Beth I'm curious as to what suggested this area as subalpine to you? I've always thought of this part of Namadgi as mostly dry woodland intergrading into montane forest with the subalpine communities higher up. Not that i've ever thought about it particularly hard! :)

I wonder if @nathkay took any other photos. I agree this one looks more like S. graminifolium. But there were some with very tight compact rosettes which got us talking about elevtion and that I thought it was quite low. Next time I'm there I'll get a better look.

This is snowgum woodland, E. pauciflora and E. Rubida. We class it is subalpine woodland but mainly because of the veg community type. You are correct in that it is much drier forest here, and the true subalpine zone is above the montane forest. Maybe we should change our terminology to snowgum woodland, would make more sense 🤔
