Very poisonous species. Parks and Biosecurity staff have suffered poisoning symptoms when brush-cutting an infestation of this species. Do not cut or handle without full PPE. Best method of control is to spray with selective herbicide.

Thanks for the alert Steve. Some of the first ink weed sightings in ACT were on Mt Majura; see Phytolacca octandra (Inkweed) with my comment reg future spread.

Steve, would you have an idea how the 800 arrived there in the first place? perhaps they were there for a while which would explain the spread on Mt Majura and Kowen?
We dealt with single plants (cut with lobber, dig out root, bag all parts and dispose). So far, we haven't got a response from PCS when we recorded an inkweed.
I think no one was dealing with the inkweed that Barb recorded at Phytolacca octandra (Inkweed) when she monitored woody weeds for a working party.

The Herbarium thinks an overlooked infestation. They noticed it was starting to spread along the Majura Parkway roadside, which resulted in the main infestation being found. Spreads quickly at damper sites.

Unfortunately it is quite widespread in Kowen Forest, I think it benefits from the disturbance created through logging. Might also have come in on logging machinery etc.
