The short terete leaves, erect scraggly habit and double beaked fruit suggest that this is Hakea sericea.

I am no expert but thought both have double beaked fruit and wasn't confident to make a decision. Does decurrens have rougher, rounded fruit?

Admittedly I jumped the gun with the features I picked out, for some reason at the time I mistakenly ruled out decurrens as having a single, less recurved beak, which is obviously not correct! Which is why I am hoping for some clarification as I can’t think of any reliable features separating these two species besides the inflorescence.

Besides H. decurrens being the expected local species, the reddish stems are also a good feature compared to H. sericea

Yeah what I’d say is that any plants that are part of a natural population in the ACT are H.decurrens, any H.sericea you see will have originated from a planting at some stage. Other than that the reddish colouration on the branchlets is a good tip from Luke.
