User's notes

many hundreds of these large flying insects , many on the ground, but very many flying, on Warks Rd. Looked to have only one pair of wings, so not Diptera?

Flies do have only one pair of functional wings. The other pair have evolved into drumstick-like organs called halteres. These function as a gyroscope which help in both balance and guidance.
