User's notes

I saw this little treasure in my back fence this morning. I'm not an ornithologist, and the photo isn't awesome but it looks like either a peregrine falcon or a grey falcon. (Edit: I've had some input from some people that have more now knowledge than I on the subject and the consensus assists to be some kind of goshawk) Has anyone got any better suggestions?

I think it is a hawk, either Collared Sparrowhawk or Brown Goshawk.

Thank you Matthew. I've also circulated it with some people at work (DAWE). The consensus appears to be a goshawk.

It's a beautiful bird

A. fasciatus, which has a rounded tail rather than the squared tail of the Collared Sparrowhawk. The Brown Goshawk also has a heavy brow, giving it a fierce look, and thicker legs and toes.

Thank you for the information @SamCol. I think that is definitely the consensus. There are so many very similar birds to confuse the inexperienced, such as myself, I've come to learn. If I'm fortunate enough to see another I'll try for a much better photo too I think.

I am confirming this from the "fierce look". The middle toe (if other toes were uncurled) also seems shorter than for a sparrowhawk.
