I'm not sure what this is? About half of the Modiola caroliniana plants had this rusty coating on the leaves. I'm guessing some sort of mite, or maybe a disease.

@KenT can you please check this one out - I don't think there are any records of the Modiola rust in Australia but this plant is in the Malvaceae

Part of Ken's email to me included the following "it is difficult to tell from the images what the orange material is. However, a rust cannot be ruled out. Unfortunately much closer and sharper images would be needed, ideally of both sides if the leaves to be more confident that it is a rust but to take it any further sample specimens would be necessary for microscopic examination. On the assumption that the host plant is as identified then the only rust seemingly known from this species is Puccinia modiolae thought to originally be from South America" (but it appears not to be in Australia). Also from the information that Ken sent Modolia carolina is NOT a known host of Puccinea Malvacearum

Hi @MichaelMulvaney , the plants in question have been removed however I have seen it on a few others around through time. If you would like a specimen I could try and find one. Host plant is definitely Modiola caroliniana.
