Thanks for you many contributions so far.
When trying to photograph a plant, if you point the camera downwards it will try to focus on the main subject which is the ground. So it is hard to get a good photo that way, especially closeups. Try focusing the camera more horizontally somehow, and make sure the background is minimal so the camera knows what you are after.
