With only juvenile leaves, I would not like to say whether this is subsp. populneus or subsp. trilobus.

Of the 24 ACT records on Australia's Virtual Herbarium 23 are for subsp. populneus and the odd one out has an inferred reference to the subspecies so I felt fairly confident in suggesting the subspecies. Subsp. trilobus is found well to the northwest of here. I have been looking at Charles Weston's planting lists recently and his Sterculia diversifolia is a synonym of Brachychiton populneus subsp. populneus. Of course it is hard to say whether the kurrajongs now are descended from local trees or Weston's plantings, wherever they came from.

You are probably right. However, there is at least one subsp. trilobus in the Botanic Gardens, so it is possible but unlikely that someone collected seed from it.

Mike - as part of my PhD thesis I established a record of plant introductions into the ACT. Charles Weston's correspondence and plant orders are in the archives. It is nearly 30 years since I did the research but I do recall that Weston obtained Kurrajong seed from Nurseries in at least Goulburn, Wagga Wagga and Melbourne, Even now nurseries are not to particular re species id of their stock. However I only have records of this species being planted by Weston as a street tree in Inner Canberra and on Mt Majura so Isaacs does seem to be a little out of the way.
