The photo of leaves does not show clearly whether the leaves are opposite or alternate.

So that's the distinguishing feature between some members of the genus? I can go and check later. They are all over the roadsides in the Higgins area.

Assuming it has alternating leaves, what species would it be? Likewise, what it be if leaves opposite?

The local ones growing in the Belconnen area are usually Wahlenbergia communis (leaves mostly alternate except for possibly a few near the base) or Wahlenbergia stricta (leaves opposite, or the uppermost subopposite, whatever that means). W. graniticola and W. multicaulis have similar sized flowers, and also occur in Canberra. The diagnostics for these are more complicated.
