Hi Aaron, so I see you came across the same acacias I saw the other day. I also wondered what they were. I hope someone can tell us. There are a lot under those power lines, but there are more further up the hill, more widely scattered. Cheers, Silke

Interesting Silke. Yeah I have no idea what they are but agree there were quite a few around that way and they were really vibrantly in flower. I'm interesting to know as well... Cheers Aaron.

Aaron, given the time of flowering, 10-20 bright yellow flowers in heads and some red stems, if this is a southern tablelands native I would be looking at descriptions of Acacia rubida

Many thanks Ken, OK I've suggested this species. Keen to know what Betty and others confirm it as.

Hi Aaron, somehow I don't think it's A. rubida. The leaves are a bit too big and nowhere did I see juvenile bipinnate foilage that persists on adult plants. I've suggested A. pycnantha since I remember that there was greyish bark on the young trees. But I'm a bit dubious about the leaf size and shape. Let's see what others think.

Thanks Silke. I was browsing through all our Acacia's yesterday and also noticed A. pycnantha. I agree it looks a good candidate as well. Michael B will likely know...

The flower heads have far too many flower heads for Acacia rubida, but fall well within the range of Acacia pycnantha. When I tested this on my new key, and assuming the flower heads were about 8 mm across, the other possibilities were Acacia melanoxylon (white to pale yellow flowers) and Acacia obtusifolia (very blunt phyllodes), and Acacia pycnantha. I am inclined to think it is Acacia pycnantha. As far as I can see from the photos it fits the descriptions in PlantNET and Flora of Australia.

Awesome, thanks for confirming Betty. I think this one was doing our heads in (well at least mine)... There is a really nice group of this species in the general area, they look fantastic at the moment.
