Frogs

Frogs belong to a group of animals called amphibians. All Australian amphibians are frogs. There are about 4000 frog species worldwide and Australia has 208 frog species; many of these are endemic - that is, they are found nowhere else in the world. Frogs play a key role in many food webs, both as predators and as prey.

One more hint I should have mentioned for your Crinia posting. There are two species in this area and they can be best identified by their call or a peek at their belly. Crinia signifera has a marbled black and white belly and parinsignifera's is granular grey. For positive id we need a shot of the belly or a note in the comments. Have a look at other images posted here to see what I mean. Those in the know always include a shot of the belly for Crinia. The Australian Museum has a very handy app to help id frogs with images and calls and also to record their calls called "FrogID", well worth downloading to get started. It's as good or better than any field guide and is kept updated. Have fun!

Thank you so much. I don’t know much about frogs and just starting my education on their identification. Your advice is very appreciated!

Don't be too keen for positive id on tadpoles. Most are impossible to tell from photos like these. Fortunately peronii has a distinctive dorsal pattern that helps in this case.

Katie, you will need to upload an image for moderators to confirm id
