This is the basal remnant of a Scleroderma, once all the spores have blown away. Initially you have a spore-filled ball, then the skin of the ball splits in several radial lines and the segments fold out to eventually give that star-like look. In a Geastrum you'd have a spore sac sitting on a star-like base.
