The spores of Hypholoma are a purplish-black when mature, but much paler initially. Some species of the genus have gill tissue of a greenish-yellow colour. As the spores mature the dark spore colour starts to dominate the gill tissue colour and you see what looks like a change in gill colour from the initial greenish-yellow to a greyish-purple.
