Hi Hejor1, sorry about the slow ID. Even though it has a chimney-shaped nest entrance like that the one Camponotus intrepidus makes, the only ant we can see clearly is Camponotus suffusus. I have seen other Camponotus suffusus nests like this in some other reports of this species, but it is a little unusual. Cheers, Jon

I'd guess this queen was in the genus Hypoponera, but it could be another genus within the subfamily Ponerinae. Hypoponera are probably very common around Canberra, but rarely seen because they spend their time in leaf litter or soil hunting for small inverterbrates. Cheers, Jon
