Hi Tim, this is a female who has probably not yet mated (after mating they fairly quickly find somewhere to build a nest and then lose their wings so they can get on with the work). Female alates are generally much larger and more strongly built than males as they have to carry enough resources to build a nest and lay eggs. Cheers, Jon
