Emydura macquarii (Macquarie Turtle)
The Macquarie or Murray River Turtle is a wide-ranging species that occurs throughout many of the rivers of the eastern half of Australia. It is found primarily in the Murray River Basin and all its major tributaries, along with a number of coastal rivers up the New South Wales Coast. Its shell may grow up to 30cm in length.
Distribution: Uncommon in Canberra region. There have been several sightings in northern Canberra and one near Burrinjuck Dam. There are only a few records for this region reported in the Atlas of Living Australia.
