Moths of Victoria, see Part 9, have defined the 'Proteuxoa sp. (5) group' of unnamed Proteuxoa (genus) moths which share the following characteristics:
- dark brown to blackish brown forewing;
- reniform mark has two, fine parallel marks (buff or white);
- small buff or white orbicular spot; and
- thorax with dark brown side panels (regulae) and a paler central panel, light brown or reddish brown.
These moths are highly variable and apparently more than one undescribed species is involved They are also known to occur in NSW and many sightings on NatureMapr of Proteuxoa (genus) moths seem to fit these criteria.
On NatureMapre we have defined the taxonomic grouping: 'Proteuxoa provisional species 5' for this group of moths.
For a more complete picture of the variability recognised in this group go to the four files entitled 'sp(5)group1-4' under Proteuxoa (genus) folio on the accompanying disc to Part 9 Moths of Victoria available from the Entomological Society of Victoria.
