Hunter, J. T. & J. J. Bruhl (1997 July 8th) Two new species of *Phyllanthus* and notes on *Phyllanthus* and *Sauropus* (Euphorbiaceae: Phyllantheae) in New South Wales. Telopea 7 (2) : 149–165 .
Quotation : " This species is known from a variety of habitats such as dry sclerophyll forest and woodland, arid shrubland and heath, at altitudes of 290–1150 m. This species has almost exclusively been labelled as *P. thymoides*, an incorrect name for *P. hirtellus* sensu stricto, (see above). *Phyllanthus occidentalis* is similar to *P. hirtellus*, in which it has been included by, for example, James and Harden (1990). The diagnostic features of *P. occidentalis* are very stable; however, around Black Mountain in the A.C.T. and the Coonabarabran area of New South Wales, some plants have a form that approaches that of *P. hirtellus*, i.e. possessing wider, less revolute leaves and less dense indumentum.
