I'm tempted to say: mouldy & chewed immature Gymnopilus junonius. The very granular/frayed cap of the specimen you're holding puzzles me. Perhaps someone rubbed it with sandpaper :-)

They were in the area under the root ball of a large tree. I carefully took one out - it’s the one I’m holding.
