As well as a photo of the mushrooms, I have included some of the drawings I made of the micro-structure. One of the features of Gymnopus is the presence of (often intricately) branched hyphae in the surface layer of the cap and I have drawn a number of these. In this particular collection the hyphae of the cap surface are basically colourless except for bands of grey-brown. The lowermost pair of drawings shows the surface views of two of these hyphae, the hatching marking the grey-brown areas. The drawing immediately above that pair shows a hyphae, with the focus now at about the midway point through the hypha, with the darker areas indicating the areas of grey-brown colour. You see that the coloured bands are raised areas on the outside of the hyphae, not pigment within the hyphae.
