User's notes

The largest flock of Gang Gangs I've ever seen! 22 birds. They landed together in this large dead tree, and I managed to get a few quick photos (excuse the quality, still learning to work the DSLR) before they took off again. We often see a few at a time around our cabin, but it was extraordinary to see so many together!

Yes very unusual particularly at this time of year when breeding is still going on. I suspect they are a flock of non-breeding birds or have moved up from the coast post breeding. The chicks fledge earlier usually around early December at low altitudes.

@MichaelMulvaney I know they breed in the area as I've spotted them checking out hollows (though I've never caught them using one, yet). Do they regularly travel such long distances, like they would have to to get here from the coast?

I am assuming your altitude is about 600m and birds are only now fledging or are a few weeks away at that altitude. Birds do flock up after breeding but we don't know how far they travel. We may get clues by tracking distinctive birds such as those at

but as of now we have very little idea at all. It was the timing of breeding that suggested a possible coastal origin to me - nothing else

@MichaelMulvaney ah, that is fascinating! We are actually closer to 800 metres there, it's quite steep, hilly country.

so fledging in your area is probably still a month away - so not to late to find a nest hollow

@MichaelMulvaney oh good! We plan to spend a good amount of time down there over Christmas, so I'll continue hunting for the hollows!
