This is basically a beetle orgy - the Australian Museum site claims that "Scientists found that in one such infestation 92% of the animals were copulating." they also swarm on flowering nectar producing trees
That could well be the case, although I did not witness copulation per se. I have a large yellow box directly beside and above the agapanthus depicted above. Thank you!
