We call them jumping bullants. They are very aggressive at times. We also have one that does not have the stripes on the abdomen ... is it likely to be the same species or a different one?

Hi Arjay, they are often called Jack Jumpers or Jumping Jacks and yes, they always seem ready to take on any intruder. The shiny stripes on the abdoment are because the abdomen (known as the gaster in ants) of this specimen is swollen, probably because it is full of nectar or honeydew from flowers or insects. When the ant disgorges the food back at the nest, the abdomen will shrink back to normal size and the lines will almost disappear. Cheers, Jon

Brilliant. Thanks. I was a bit puzzled why some of them had the stripes (which actually are very attractive) and some didn't.
