@ConBoekel : There are 13 named species in Hemibela, for which the larva lives in a hollowed-out twig like this. Can you capture it and rear it to the adult moth to find out which species it is?
This would be a new sort of activity for me to do. This year I am giving priority to building the DSW list and also recording the spread across DSW of the more common species. I have no idea how to go about raising larva. I will have a talk this Saturday about it and see whether I want to get into it next spring.
Rearing a caterpillar is not a life changing activity. Just pop it in a clean bottle with fabric on top held with an elastic band, give it a couple of gum leaves, and put it where you can peek at it everyday to see if the moth emerged the previous night. When it emerges, you can pop the bottle into the fridge to put the moth to sleep, till you have time to take to portrait.
