A sad post. This nesting hollow was going strongly, and was an interesting one to observe because the gang gangs moved in very soon after galahs had raised a family and left the hollow. After seeing constant changeover in early December, a pole camera found an egg - we do not know whether there were more eggs. In late December to mid-January, the parents continued to attend the nest, with the female keeping guard overnight. I believe I heard chicks being fed. During my observation today, all seemed well. The parents flew in to trees close to the hollow - all normal and as to be expected, because as the chicks grow and get stronger, they don't need constant parent attendance. Then mum flew to the hollow, but instead of going down into the hollow to feed her hungry chicks, she remained at the entrance, looking in. She then growled and spread her wings, and my heart sank. That behaviour usually meant there was a predator inside the hollow. After quite a while, she flew to the trees close by, where her mate was sitting. Fortunately, TomT was able to come and pole the hollow, where we discovered not one, but two kreft's gliders! No sign of chicks - they'd become a meal for the gliders. Later, a galah had a look into the hollow. I found a couple of tail feathers near the tree, and photo 3 shows where I suspect the female lost some tail feathers in her struggle to protect her young against the marauding gliders. :(

Sadder than sad :( So much predation of gang gangs (and who know what other birds) by possums and gliders . . .
