These were almost stationary, with bodies lifted high off the ground and seemed to be facing off in pairs. Is this social or aggressive behaviour?

Hi Mike, these ants are doing "ritualised fighting" a territorial display in which the ants try to work out where the boundary between two different Meat ant colony territories is, without actually having to fight each other. There is interesting information on this at the link below. Cheers, Jon
