Yes, this is in the group known as carpenter ants in the US and Europe but usually known as sugar ants in Australia. Cheers, Jon

Thanks Jon. We have three or four of them in the kitchen and living room at any time. They can be on the ceiling, floor or walls. I have now called pest control but I have no idea where they live. They seem to move around as single individuals and without any obvious source or destination. Hmmm...

I know, I like them a lot. They are very friendly but apparently they live in wood and can destroy houses. That's what worries me. They also have a tendency to drop down from the ceiling either onto people, which is not so bad, or into our food which is not very good. I'm very sorry to have to "pest control" them. I suspect it won't work anyway because I have no idea where they live.

Wikipedia says this species makes its nest in soil under rocks and sometimes logs. Popular with people who like to keep ant colonies.
