User's notes

St John's Wort Weed large Infestation resurgence. This area has been weeded / sprayed before but under current favourable moist growth conditions, it's coming back with a vengeance. 1000's of plants at this location. Probably need both handweeding and spraying BEFORE Flowering period in about a month.

Hi Max this area has not been sprayed or treated in any way since Friends of Mt Majura started work at The Fair project in 2012 and I doubt it was treated before 2012 given the amount of St Johns Wort plants that I observed during my monitoring of (what became ) the Fair project site and its surrounds before 2012. Therefore, I have been jumping up and down every year particularly in really bad StJW seasons such as the last summer to beg and plead with PCS to begin treatment of StJW in the timbered perimeter of The Fair project. Therefore, I was deeply disappointed when StJW was not treated in the perimeter last summer although I received a map of proposed contract work that indicated the area to be treated. Therefore, FoMM volunteers hand-removed truckloads of fruiting StJW in some key (hoary sunray) sites as not to add more seeds to the area which can last for decades in the soil seed bank (we did not come around that far east though). 2021/22 will be the worst StJW season since FoMM started in 2003; I see StJW where I haven't seen it before or huge outbreaks where there was little and where it seemed to be under control. I'm afraid, neither the volunteers nor PCS nor contractors will have the capacity to deal with the vast amount of StJW.

Hi Waltraud, yes unfortunately I think you are correct. The density of St John's Wort plants here looks very bad this year, sigh..., 🙃
