I wonder whether numbers increase because of warmer temperatures particularly in winter?

They have been in Canberra for quite a few years but they are spreading out a lot more and their numbers are increasing. Warmer winters would help them as well. Things are definitely changing a lot.

COG ‘Birds of Canberra Gardens’ 2009 said ‘not common in Canberra’, “While some birds seen in Canberra may be wild birds moving through or aviary escapees, there does appear to be a small wild population based in southern Belconnen suburbs”. COG now says ‘common breeding resident’. They are introduced pests in WA and NZ. They are aggressive and are taking over nesting hollows used by other parrots, likely including gang gangs. Unfortunately, they are probably introduced pests and should be treated in the same way as Cootamundra wattle.
