It was an unusually large ant.

Hi kasiaaus, this is a queen ant. When there is rain at this time of the year, ant nests send out winged queens to find mates and then look for a place to start a new nest. This queen has probably mated, shed her wings and is looking for a good nest spot. Cheers, Jon

Thanks. That's interesting. I should have caught it and taken it far away from my house. I do not want any more ants nests in my garden :-)
