The suggested species is associated with exotic conifers, was there a pine tree near the fruit body? I think I see a pine needle in the second image.

Yes, there are pines around (stone pines) and other exotics. I looked this up after your suggested name, and it seems that this is an edible fungi?

Yes some people do eat them together with the invertebrate fauna in and on them, young fresh specimens would probably be best. Some of the literature suggests this is a species complex but I've not looked at how this might influence perceptions of edibility.
