I have always called these Argentine ants, Iridomyrmex humilis. They have returned this Christmas so I thought I should add this old sighting.

Jon - how widespread is this invasive ant in our region. Should we be trying to eradicate it. There is only one other ACT record of this ant in the Atlas of Living Australia - but the ANIC ant data has yet to be added into the database

Mike it appears you have had these ants before - did you get in contact with anybody from the ACT Government? Are you aware of them elsewhere?

So far the only other ACT records I can get for the Argentine ant are a 1997 record from Philip and an 1981 record from Waramanga

I thought they were fairly common so didn't report them earlier. According to Canberra Pest Control https://canberrapestcontrol.com.au/pests/ant-control-exterminator/ "Of the 1,300 species of ants found in Australia, the 6 most common in the Canberra area are the white footed house ant, black house ant, bull ant, banded sugar ant, meat ant and Argentine ant." We haven't had spider/insect treatment around our house for years but maybe it's time.

Thanks Mike - I am trying to chase down the veracity of the information on the website - it doesn't tally with the recorded or collected occurrence
