Hi RodDeb, this looks like a young female Scarlet Percher, but you've indicated a size of 50 mm or greater which is too big for a Scarlet Percher. Can you expand or clarify?

Hi Harvey, this Dragonfly was definately bigger than 50mm.
It was approx. 60 - 70 mm bodly length and approx. 100 - 110 mm wingspan. The wings were very shiny. In the second photo we estimate that the wood panel was about 50 mm high and the Dragonfly is longer than this. Hope this helps, thanks for your time.

RodDeb - I'm afraid I can't see this as anything other than a female teneral Scarlet Percher. Except for the size issue. And what appears to be a lighter patch on the sides of the thorax - don't suppose you got any side-on shots?
Can I suggest you maybe put it up on Bowerbird and see what response you get.

It's definitely not a Blue Skimmer.

have added another 2 pics, unfortunately when I was choosing what pics to use I realized we should have taken side shots of the dragonfly, apologies about not doing it at the time.
Sorry don't know about the Bowerbird site, there are too many sites out there for us.
Thanks for your time and help sorry to make it so difficult, will try to get our grey cells working a bit more when we take photos.

Hi Harvey,
went back to the Zoo yesterday after going to the ANBG and measured the post that the Dragonfly was photographed on. Working with that the measurements of the Dragonfly are:
Wingspan: 6.7cm or 67mm body length: 4.25cm or 42.5mm
Apologies we were way out with our guess on the size.
Hope this helps. Thanks for your patience.
