during drought, nutrients accumulate in the soil; when it finally rains particularly when the soil is still warm everything explodes. Since native groundcover has nearly gone due to overgrazing, the weeds have a great run. I must say though I'm disappointed about the very high rate of germination at sites where we treated (sprayed and mechanical removal) PC for years. At some sites, I wonder whether it is not a bad thing to let it grow because it is the only plant that holds the soil together. The overgrazing has by far the biggest negative impact on the conservation values of the grassy woodlands in the nature reserves. We could inundate Mt Majura with herbicide year in year out - which we've done at some parts - until all weeds are gone however all what we will end up with is bare ground and erosion. The paddock is close to this scenario.
