In bud. Leaves very small but they almost disappeared over winter.

It can lose the leaflets altogether just leaving the rachis.
Any idea what the btown gunge is?

The clusters of flower buds look brown. The stems will lengthen before the individual flowers appear. I visited the site to see whether the plants had survived. They were cut down a few years ago and I have been checking the regrowth.

They are quite long lived. I had had one (planted) in my garden for about 40 years. I thought it had died, but it resprouted from the base and is now as big as it was before,
