User's notes

A winged coconut ant. Several winged ants seen through gaps in tunnel, but these were the only photos I was able to get. Once the ants sense being observed they usually retreat to their tunnels as seen in images 2 and 3. Many trees, all stringybarks, with ant tunnels in this area. Area burnt in 2014.

Thanks Kath I am wondering whether the Aranda open forest have a different species of Papyrus than what we are finding in the Box-Gum woodland - will try and get some-body that knows more than me to look at photos.
Thanks

Checked with Suzi Bond who asked at the National Insect Collection. There probably is a complex of coconut ant species, but the taxonomic work is yet to be done, so we will treat them as one species on Canberra Nature Map
