(1) First record of Diplodium truncatum for Mt Majura (2) in an area that has the highest recorded diversity of orchids including critically endangered species and other plant species listed rare.

Waltraud, did you see Aaron's email? - we wondered if it would be useful to cover the few plants where the sole Diplodium at the second site has been uprooted.

Peter, i'm super busy right now and wonder whether you could do the cover up? i could provide wire mesh guards and stakes and could leave them at the blue metal road park entrance or i could squeeze in an hour tomorrow (Wednesday) morning between 9.30 and 10.30am.

Hey Peter, I don't suppose you also feel like doing up a new larger cage for our precious single known location of Duiris dendrobiodes if you are getting some gear from Waltraud? The current cage has been there for like 3 years and the plant has outgrown it and the cage and stakes are way too close and damaging the ground very close to the plant... The cage also regularly blows away and rips out of the ground - I can send you the location if that's helpful, only thing is it's a tricky little single plant to find. Cheers Aaron.

Aaron, I would be more than happy to do this but could I check the site first to see what needs to be done then get the material from Waltraud to set up a new cage. I don’t know where the Diuris cage is so maybe you could send the coordinates.
You would be aware there are a number of cages near the upper dam that also seem fairly knocked about and even overgrown and could be repaired a bit depending on what is under them and whether it can be done without damaging the protected species. I don’t know if these are checked every year?

The cages at the dams are installed by CPR I think and unfortunately they seemed not to be checked. The Majura twin dams are the play ground of the local Hackett Blue Gum School and the cages seemed to be kicked around quite a bit ....
I'm happy to provide wire mesh guards for orchid protection. However since I have only hard wood stakes extra care is required to not damage the orchids when the stakes are hammered in. If the orchid is dormant/not visible I suggest to wait.

Waltraud, do we need to buy a bag of like metal tent pegs or something? They seem much better for this kind of thing as they can penetrate the really hard ground?

I have plenty of u-shaped steel pegs, 15cm long, 3cm wide sharply pointed on both ends. We could use dismantled i.e. flattened wire mesh guards / chicken wire to form a protective tent / canopy over the orchids and fix the wire mesh with the steel pegs.
