I confirmed this as Melicytus dentatus as it has lateral spines, while the flora of Victoria description for Melicytus angustifolia states that it's branches have a single end spine

I'd be thinking it is a slightly atypical angustifolius. The key in the paper describing it says rigid, divaricately branched stems, which this appears to have (as opposed to flexible ones with lots of lateral spines in dentatus) and there don't appear to be many lateral spines on this plant. Plus the alpine habitat suggests angustifolius. However, my photos of the two species show angustifolius with smooth-edged obovate leaves and dentatus with leaves having 4 teeth per side. Some leaves on this plant seem to have a couple of small teeth. Perhaps they intergrade a bit?
