I saw this growing in a seepage area below the tanks on Gungahlin Hill. I identified it using pictures from a wildflower book of the UK flora. Common name is meadow marigold As far as I know, it is not recorded before in the ACT
Thanks Walter, Marsh Marigold is considered to have a reasonably high weed potential and this appears to be the first naturalised record of the plant in the ACT. It is one that we will get onto and try and eradicate. Steve would be worth taking a herbarium specimen, for definitive ID. Thanks again for alerting us to the presence of this plant Walter
Thanks Michael. The plant is on the north-west slope below the tank - easily accessible from a style over the fence on the Crace boundary. - off Drooka Crescent.
Has material been taken to the herbarium so they can have an official record for their plant census? If not I will collect some this week. Seems wise we eradicate.
There is a look-a-like from Europe that is an invasive weed in North America - lesser celandine or pilewort (Ficaria verna). It outcompetes the North American native, marsh marigold. Lesser Celandine is recorded as naturalised at only at one location in SE Australia, at Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, according to Weeds Of The South East 3rd Edition.
