Significant sighting

MichaelMulvaney noted:

31 Oct 2014

This is the first record of this fern in the ACT, it is known to be a significant invader in parts of America and coastal north NSW

User's notes

Some kind of very tough surviving fern growing in crack on an overpass across Horse Park Drive / Majura Parkway. Was fertile with lots of seeds under the fronds. I have no idea what it is...

I think that's a garden escape. Looks like Japanese Holly Fern, Cyrtomium falcatum

Wow interesting! There is a ton of the stuff on 2-3 sides of the overpass at different aspects as well. It seems quite robust and pretty happy there.

David is it possible to check this plant out to confirm its ID. - I think it is the first ACT record of naturalised Japanese Holly Fern, which is considerde to be a significant environmental weed elsewhere in the world including North America and parts of NSW - we may want to tackle this infestation if it is indeed Japanese Holly fern - Thanks michael

I don't have a way of keying out the fern, but it could be worth contacting The Australian herbarium (ANBG) to report the occurrence. I haven't had any contact with them for several years, it looks like Jim Croft is still there. and he would be ideal to confirm it. http://www.anbg.gov.au/people/jim.croft.html

Drove past the other day and there are 20-30 reasonably healthy looking plants growing here still.

Yep I see them regularly.

I collected a fertile specimen of this for the herbarium on 20 Aug 2017 (RWPurdie 11202).

Thanks Rosemary - we made the decision that it is unlikely to become a significant weed in the ACT - largely because of the specialisation of its habitat - but would be interested in any counter opinions

I agree - very unlikely to spread.
