You need open flowers to decide whether this is Tragopogon dubius (yellow) (Southern Tablelands and ACT) or T. porrifolius (purple) (widespread). In the Purple Book I mentioned that the flowers open early in the morning and are closed for most of the day. I have recently been told that that is not correct. Flowers open at any time of day and are only open for a short time.
I saw that the spent petals at the tip of the seed head were yellowish and dissected the remaining bud which had bright yellow petals - I didn't know how long I would have had to wait for it to open. I think both species are becoming more common though T. dubius is not reported by ALA before 1981.
