Your first photo is particularly interesting as on the left hand side of the cap there appears to be two small 'upsidedown caps' This is commonly known as rosecomb and is said to be caused by petrolium, namely deisel pollution. It's hard to tell from the photo but that would be my guess.

Thanks. They are a long way from any roads. Perhaps our smoky summer may have had an effect.

It's possible as pollution is supposed to be a factor. Unfortunately I don't know enough about it to comment further.
