User's notes

Thanks to Barbara Leach and Blue Gum Community School for the initial sighting of this pellet complete with a piece of plastic wrapper. Unsure what the pellet is from so have just placed it under the Bird category for now. It contained soil, small pebbles, small feathers, fur, grass and the piece of plastic.

I'm not convinced this is a bird. Could be a fox scat??? A scavenging fox would probably be more likely to ingest rubbish. Foxes are not uncommon scavenging on the outskirts of towns which are adjacent to bushland/farmland.

However if it is a bird it is probably a pellet regurgitated by an owl. Owls often regurgitate indigestible material such as fur, bones and feathers. I've observed this behaviour before in Powerful Owls in Sydney and also in Barn and African Grass Owls in South Africa. If it is an owl it is probably impossible to determine the species, but a Boobook would be most likely at that location.

Thanks for this information Luke. I haven't seen a pellet like this before so have no idea what it's likely to be from. It was noticeable that there was a significant amount of soil in the pellet (third image) and a few quite small stones, if that helps anyone with the identification.
