User's notes

Third sighting of this cicada species, apparently the same species, since 3/12/16. First two came to light in the evening. This observation made in mid to late afternoon in my garden on a sorrel plant. The cicada flew a short distance to nearby grasses, climbed to a vantagew point, then flew away out of sight. No calling head.

Dr Lindsay Popple (pers. comm. 12/12/16) has viewed the first and third images posted above and identified the species as 'Clicking Ambertail' Yoyetta sp. (cf. tristagata). That is, a yet to be described species, pending publication of taxonomic research currently underway by himself and colleagues. Images of this yet to be described species and a recording of its song my be seen at the following webpage: http://dr-pop.net/485.htm . Lindsay says that this species, although common in Canberra, is not commonly seen due to its favouring habitat high in eucalypt trees usually well out of sight of ground-based observers. However, the species may be observed at emergence or soon after at ground level, like most cicadas, as was the case here.
